WITH the Ashes on the horizon, budding cricketers from across East Renfrewshire are being bowled over by a new programme.
The council’s sports services team joined forces with East Renfrewshire junior cricket club and cricket Scotland to encourage more youngsters to pick up the bat and ball.
Each week,a club junior training night, will take place at the synthetic sports pitch in Cowan Park, from 6pm every Friday
Taster sessions in schools will begin in August, as well as an out-of-school-hours cricket programme.
Chair of the East Renfrewshire cricket club, Qamar Bhatti, said: “The establishment of the junior sessions show how multi-cultural and multi-ethnic the great sport of cricket is.
“It can bring together youngsters and their families from all walks of life and backgrounds.”
The programme is part of cricket Scotland’s drive to develop the next generation of players.
Head coach Ammar Ashra, added: “I can see these young people going onto play at club level and even for Scotland in the next few years.”
“The enthusiasm shown by the children has been immense. They love the fun style of cricket that we give them and several are already showing so much natural talent.
“Our ambition is to give everyone a strong, positive and fun experience in the sport.”
