IN 2007 Glen Ballantyne, Williamwood golf club junior convenor, put his neck on the line by persuading the club to allow two nine-year-old boys into the club, three years before juniors should normally be admitted.

Now Fraser Davren and George Burns (both 15) have been selected for the eight-man Scotland under-16 squad.

The team will travel to Ireland in April to compete in the Quadrangular series against Ireland, Holland and Wales at Hilton Templepatrick golf club, just outside Belfast.

The boys’ golfing progress was further recognised by the club when they picked them to play for the gents team in the Brand Putter league.

Fraser and George also represent the Glasgow Golf Union at both junior and youth level.

George told ExtraSport: “It is a great honour to be selected to play for our country and being recognised at a national level has given us a lot of confidence going into the 2012 season”.

Fraser added: “We look forward to being part of the Williamwood team which aims to retain the Fleming Watson Trophy in 2012”.
