Playing his part

Clarkston man Paul Mackie, who launched the Glasgow rowing club in Glasgow Green and built a new boathouse in the Gorbals, is volunteering at London 2012.

He will be helping with the rowing and canoeing events — both held at Eton Dorney near Windsor.

Paul told ExtraSport: “This is a once in a lifetime experience. It’s not just the athletes who will have to be at their best — all the volunteers have been training hard for this event, no matter what their involvement or role”.

Paul is team leader for the medal ceremonies, meaning he is responsible for organising athletes after the final and ensuring medalists and presenters know what they should do.

He added: “The eyes of the world will be on the athletes being presented with their Olympic medals and everything has to be perfect. No pressure then!”

Paul was previously involved in medal ceromonies and VIPs at the Eton Dorney rowing course for the Olympic test event last summer.

He also produced and presented bids to host the 2005 world master and the 2007 world under-23 event in Strathclyde Park on behalf of GB.
