50 YEARS AGO

* A haul of several thousand cigarettes was made by thieves who broke into Braidwood sub post office. Entry was gained by forcing a door.

* The Department of Health had agreed to give a 50 per cent grant towards the cost of the new sewage purification works and pumping station for Braidwood and Crossford.

* Legless Carluke swimmer Jimmy Hamilton had to discontinue hospital visits as his car was off the road for repairs. But he hoped to be making his usual rounds reasonably soon.

* New gas central heating was installed at Carluke's Templars' Hall by Mr James Marshall.

* Claims by Lanark County Council members for travelling and other expenses in attending meetings from November 11 to December 8 amounted to 1846.

* Lanark-born jockey Tommy Gosling, who had retired from racing at the age of 31 in 1958, was to make a comeback in the saddle. Gosling had made a full recovery from a bad fall.

* Carluke Rovers coach Davie Hutchison, former Motherwell and Newcastle inside forward, was appointed Luton Town's chief Scottish scout. This left John Martin to take over at Loch Park.

100 YEARS AGO

* Children of New Lanark Church Sabbath School enjoyed eating apples and playing games at a social gathering in the large hall, supported by the continued generosity of Mrs Finlay of Bonnington.

* "The Stars" was the subject of an exhaustive lecture on

astronomy by Mr Alex Main, at the weekly meeting of Carnwath Literary Society.

* Local dentist Watson Rodger could be consulted at Forth (12.30 to 3.30pm) and Haywood (4 to 6pm), on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

* Law UF Church's Annual Sabbath School soiree in the church included splendid cinematograph entertainment provided by Glasgow's Mr Henderson.

* With the score at 1-1, Carluke Milton Rovers' Lanarkshire first division clash at Larkhall Thistle was abandoned after 55 minutes due to heavy rain. McMillan scored Carluke's goal.

* Former Carluke resident Malcolm Black discovered a goldfield in Ontario, Canada, and made headlines in local paper The Cobalt Daily Nugget.

* Mr JH Cassels was to address a meeting of Carluke Christian Union in the Evangelistic Hall the next evening at 7pm.
