IT WAS all smiles at the Scottish relay championships when Giffnock North fought off competition from Scotland’s best club athetes to claim three national titles and two bronze medals.

At Grangemouth, in the Scottish relay championships, the u14 girls team of Nikki Miller, Danielle Kelly and Erin Wallace set the standard for the day with a Scottish record of seven minutes, 17.96 seconds in the 3x800m.

The u16 girls trio of Sarah Eunson, Rebecca Metcalfe and Holly Still earned bronze while Giffnock’s u14 boys looked to have gone one better with a silver, only to be disqualified on a minor technicality.

Giffnock’s sprint relay squads powered to the first of two Scottish titles with blistering 4x100m runs from Calum Alexander, Ross Lipp, Tom Marshall and Andy Moses (51.23 seconds).

The under 16 girls foursome replied with another gold and a new club record in 50.71 seconds from Amy Donaghy, Jenna Wrisberg, Sophie Haldane and Rachel Alexander, edging Edinburgh AC by less than two tenths of a second.

In the 4x400m final, the club’s u20/senior men’s squad nailed bronze with Sandy Morrow’s last gasp dive over the line.

John Birkett, taking the M55 shot title, and Angela Kelly, winning her veterans’ 100 metres crown.
