Giffnock Soccer Centre kids win Scottish Cup for the first time

Giffnock Soccer Centre (GSC) under-16s won the 2019 Scottish Cup to become the first team to win this tournament in the club’s history.

Goals from Scott McMillan and Ben MacFarlane saw Giffnock beat the defending champions Longniddry Villa 2-0 at the Airdrie Excelsior Stadium on Saturday.

This East Renfrewshire community football club had reached the final by beating St Patricks SA 5-2, Barrhead YFC Sky Blues 3-1, Newtongrange Star YD 12-0, Jerviston FC 8-2, Tynecastle FC 3-1, Johnstone Burgh 2-1 and finally beating Finnart BC 3-1 in the semi-final.

Giffnock scored a whacking 38 goals during the tournament, conceding only eight, with Ben Conroy the top scorer with 13 goals in the competition.

This latest triumph followed another first in GSC’s history was last season, when this U16s team won the Paisley Johnstone and District first division league.

This year, the team have reached the final in no less than four major tournaments.

After winning the Scottish Cup at the weekend, the boys are now facing the talented Glenvale AFC for the league decider game this week.

They are then heading to Port Glasgow on Saturday to compete in the Renfrewshire Cup final. Finally, the last stop is the West Region Cup final against tough opponents Rossvale United.
