GLASGOW City were last night very proudly awarded team of the year at the sportscotland Scottish sports awards.

There, they joined some of the most famous faces in sport for the glittering night at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow, hosted by Sky Sports presenter Jim White .

Glasgow City’s continued there dominance of the domestic game and in particular the record breaking achievement of winning two trebles in a row.

Their case was further boulstered by reaching the last 16 the of the European Champions League, convinced the judges that City are Scotland’s team of the year for 2013.

City Club Manager Laura Montgomery told The Extra: “It is an incredible honour for us to receive such a prestigious award. We truthfully didn’t think we stood a chance given the calibre of performances by teams in Scotland this season.

“We were delighted just to be shortlisted down to the final three, along with the Glasgow Warriors and the Scotland Women’s Curling team.

“From a personal point of view, I am glad the efforts of our team and coaching staff have been recognised at the highest level.

“Sometimes those outside our club can feel that winning is easy, because we have made a habit of it over the last seven years in particular, but it most definitely is not easy. Each year, we work harder and harder to not sustain where we are at, but to improve.

“Our coaching staff challenge themselves and the players to reach new levels at every training session and hopefully this award gives credit to everything all members of Glasgow City have achieved.

“It is not simply our first team who make this happen, but every player and member of staff from our Under 9’s upwards.”

Meanwhile, a total of eight Glasgow City players headed off to Brazil this week with the Scotland national team to take part in a four team mini-tournament.

Rachel Corsie, Leanne Ross, Leanne Crichton, Sarah Crilly, Nicky Docherty, Christie Murray, Jo Love and Eilish McSorley headed off as part of a 20-strong Scotland player squad in the early hours of Monday morning from Edinburgh Airport.

Yesterday, Scotland played their first fixture against Canada, while Brazil are their opponents on Sunday and they face Chile the following Wednesday. The placing match takes place on Sunday December 22.
