The new £150 million community development project in Newton Mearns will see 834 new homes and a new Maidenhill Primary School in the centre of the development.

Concerns had been raised over the plans that an existing flooding problem will be greatly exacerbated.

However, a legal challenge by Newton Mearns Residents Flood Prevention Group was rejected by the Court of Session last month.

Homebuilders CALA Homes (West) and Taylor Wimpey are working on the development.

Angus Murray of CALA Homes (West) said: “We have spoken about Maidenhill as a new community for a very long time so it is great to be able to break the ground to mark work commencing.”

Brian Henderson of Taylor Wimpey added: “We’ll be working closely with East Renfrewshire Council and the local community to ensure Newton Mearns reaps the benefits of our long-term investment in the area.”
