THIS is a view of the main street which was at the heart of the old village of Newton Mearns.

Although there was lots of house building in Mearns at various points during the first half of the 20th century, the original village had been in decline.

Many of the buildings became ‘uninhabitable’ and lay empty.

During the 1960s, a developer — Sir Ian Mactaggart — had gradually acquired all the older property on Main Street and in 1970 the whole area was flattened to become the site for a new shopping centre which opened in 1972 — and was later upgraded and renamed The Avenue.
