And now the family who have been running the Glasgow restaurant since December 2016 are enjoying their own taste of success.

The Indian on Skirving Street has been named the Best Indian Restaurant in Scotland at the prestigious Scottish Entertainment and Hospitality Awards.

It’s not the first award for the restaurant. In December 2017, The Indian on Skirving Street won Best Newcomer at the Spice Awards.

That, said Dee Lalli, was “unbelievable” as the restaurant was up against some really terrific competition.

And the latest award was even more unexpected.

Dee said: “We were delighted to be finalists but believed that there was little chance of us winning.

“My son Arjun, the main man behind the success of the restaurant, was reluctant to attend the awards ceremony as he didn’t think we stood a chance. I persuaded him to attend the awards with his fiancee Talisha.

“We were humbled to receive this award. We have put in so much hard work, effort, love and passion into this restaurant that it was thrilling to be recognised as the Best Indian Restaurant in Scotland.”

The restaurant is a family-run business. There’s mum Dee, and her son Arjun, who is only 24 but has been working in the trade since he was 17.

Dee said: “Arjun has vision and passion for the work he is doing and unless you really and truly love it, you will not make it work. Your love for your job or what you do is always noticed in the delivery of the product.

“We buy our own vegetables and raw ingredients. We don’t leave it to the suppliers to give us what they want. Our ingredients have to be fresh and of very good quality.

“We are a very Punjabi home-style dining experience. Our dishes are all prepared individually and not from one pot. Our menu is very limited. When it’s gone, it’s gone – we will not try to improvise as this detracts from the quality.”

Dee added that the restaurant had a great team in the kitchen and and delightful staff working front house.

“We take a great deal of pride in our food and service – it is very personal and each customer is treated with great respect and hospitality.

“The Indian on Skirving Street is a happy place, a fun place to dine where you are promised excellent food and terrific service.”
