A recently established service is urging East Renfrewshire residents to contact them if they need advice and support on paying their mortgage.
The money advice and rights team (MART) have been made aware that a number of homeowners across East Renfrewshire who are struggling to pay their mortgage are using private sale and rent back schemes to prevent their home from being repossessed.
Private sale and rent back schemes provide homeowners with a private tenancy agreement however it contains little security of tenure and can cause the owner problems when claiming for housing benefits.
The team want to make residents aware that a government scheme is in place, which is available through the Homeowner Support Fund and can be accessed with the support of one of our money advisors.
The Homeowner Support Fund’s Mortgage to Rent scheme provides homeowners with a Scottish Secure Tenancy meaning their tenancy has no end date. Valuations are carried out and checks are made to ensure that all avenues have been explored, which in turn normally satisfies the evidence requirements for housing benefit claims.
Councillor Ian McAlpine, convener for corporate services said: “Keeping up with your mortgage payments can be stressful. However people don’t need to resort to drastic measures. Our money advice and rights team are experts in this area and can offer free, confidential, impartial and independent advice to anyone who contacts them.
“Please don’t feel you are alone with any money concerns. Get in touch if you need support. We can help you resolve your financial problems and help access any money you may be entitled to.”
