At the end of the first year in secondary school, most first year pupils will be looking forward to school trips and the wind down to the holidays.

But for local dancer Siobhan Grady (12) there is no time for relaxation, as for her this is the busiest time of the school year. Instead she has daily, after school and weekend rehearsals for the annual showcase performance of the Dance School.

That is because, unlike her former primary school classmates, Siobhan didn’t move on to her local secondary school but instead fulfilled her dream. To dance!

Siobhan, from Newton Mearns and a former pupil of Kirkhill Primary, now studies as a residential scholar at the prestigious Dance School of Scotland.

Siobhan’s love of dancing began at the age of three when she joined the Margaret Gilbride & Marianne Crawley School of Dance in Newton Mearns.

While there she attended the renowned Scottish Ballet Associate programme, as well as dancing and touring with Scottish Ballet in The Nutcracker.

Then last year, after a series of challenging auditions, Siobhan was one of only a dozen or so young dancers offered a first year place to study at the Dance School of Scotland in Knightswood.

Despite living in nearby Newton Mearns, the youngster had to leave home to become a residential student - a fair challenge for anyone these days, but much more for a 12-year-old.

So how has her first year been?

“Exciting and tiring but I love it,” said Siobhan. “As dance is part of the school timetable, I get to dance every day during the school day as well as after school. I have made lots of friends who, like me, love to dance. We are really excited about the school’s annual showcase and can’t wait to step on stage at the Theatre Royal.”

You can see Siobhan and all of the talented S1-S6 dance students performing at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow, on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18. Tickets from Theatre Royal, Glasgow, online via: or by calling the box office on: 0844 871 7615 (Calls cost 7p per minute).
