Decadent dinners are what December is all about — and that’s before you get to that turkey and trimmings.
The festive season brings opportunities galore to stuff yourself full of rich grub, all in the name of celebrating Christmas (and quite right too).
For an area brimming with restaurants, this side of the Clyde has been lacking in the steak department — but The McMillan Southside looks set to fill that gap nicely.
The former carpet shop overlooking Queen’s Park is enormous, allowing for plenty of tables and cosy booths — but there’s clever mood lighting at work to ensure that, even with an industrial high ceiling, the place doesn’t feel cold or empty.
The other half opted for a hearty lentil broth to start — warm and comforting as the temperature dropped outside.
No soup could rival my scallops though; savoury char on the outside, sweet and plump on the inside, and served with a classic crisp pancetta and pea and mint puree. It may not be a game changer of a dish, but these were the best scallops I’d had in a long time, and I could happily have tucked into them all over again.
Still, it was on to the main event — in the OH’s case, an 8oz fillet steak served with chips and a potent roquefort sauce (mopped up to the last drop).
The chips were excellent; crisp, fluffy with a touch of rustic skin still showing — the perfect accompaniment to a tender cut of meat.
I had ordered the half lobster, but the last one had already scuttled from the kitchen. Still, with another impressive fillet — cooked to perfection as rare as requested and topped with garlic butter — laid in front of me, it was very hard to complain.
We shared a decent chocolate fudge cake to finish before rolling out and onwards.
The McMillan is just what the Shawlands food scene needs, with the appeal of a special occasion steak stretching well into 2015 and beyond — but with the Christmas lights twinkling, there seems no better time to indulge.
