Restaurant Review: Head east for a cut above the rest

So over the dirty food trend? Then you haven’t paid a visit to Dennistoun recently.

Just when you think you’ve seen enough burgers, pulled pork and fries with words like ‘stealth’ added on behind, along comes a place which reminds you of the childish pleasure of getting your hands finger-licking sticky.

Not having ventured east of High Street for a while, I’m slow to the table for Jaybes’ Dennistoun Bar B Que.

The menu looks much like those trendy city centre burger joints, all towering patties and meat-on-meat combinations, along with some trendy imported soft drinks (Mexican Coke, anyone?)

Then, you spot an unholy combination — two ingredients you no doubt love separately, sitting side by side on paper like it’s no big deal. That’s right; Nutella ribs. With your reviewer relishing pre-diet holiday dining, if this joint was daring me to order then I was game for the challenge.

The verdict? Nutella ribs are up there with garlic bread on taste sensation flavour combinations. My half rack arrived slathered in a dark, sticky sauce with depths of flavour stretching from savoury tang to sweet hazelnut with every bite — big eaters, take note: full racks are available too.

The other half went safer with a Columbia burger; bacon, cheese, pit pork and slaw piled on top of a very well made patty — and, despite having had our fill of burgers recently, this went above and beyond on flavour.

From the sides menu, we shared tasty seasoned fries and excellent barbecue beans; a molasses-rich campfire stew a far cry from the tinned variety.

Fingers well and truly licked, we rolled back out onto Duke St and hopped on a train heading for town. The only thing wrong with this place? There’s no branch closer to home — which is a shame, because Dennistoun Bar B Que could teach city centre, southside and westend competitors a thing or two.
