Mearns Village Community Association is delighted that the Scottish Government Reporter has today upheld their objection to a planning application.
There has been a long standing flooding issue in the village since the 1950s. when a burn was culverted under the village. It runs through Netherplace Crescent and under the Village Scout Hall. The only remaining open part of the burn is in Netherplace Crescent.
The burn floods on a regular basis during periods of heavy rainfall causing road closures locally.
Last year Mansell homes submitted a planning application to build 83 properties on the fields behind the former Malletsheugh Inn. They planned to drain the surface water from the new development through the village.
The Association lodged compelling evidence that the correct drainage route should be via another route and if allowed to use existingdrainage this would have increased the flood risk in the.
The Reporter, having listened to all the available evidence, agreed with the Association that the drainage needed to be properly investigated and that it had not been, and refused the appeal.
