David Mundell, the Conservatives Scottish Secretary, has openly admitted to being gay.
The 53-year-old Clydesdale MP is understood to have told Pime Minister David Cameron of his decision to come out.
Mr Cameron’s spokesman said: “The Prime Minister is delighted that he’s in a position to take this step.”
Mr Mundell said: said in his blog that making his public announcement was “one of the most important decisions” of his life and that he “just wanted to get on with it”.
The minister who has three children has received unanimous cross-party support for his decision.
