Are you registered to vote in the European Elections?

East Renfrewshire residents are being reminded to register to vote in the European Election, which will be held on Thursday, May 23.

The deadline for registering to vote is Tuesday, May 7 and if you are not on the electoral roll by this time then you will miss out on the chance to vote.

Anyone not able to make it to polling stations who would like to vote can also apply for a postal vote, as long as they apply before the deadline of 5pm on Wednesday, May 8.

Alternatively an application can be made for a proxy vote, which allows someone else to attend and vote on your behalf.

The deadline for this is 5pm on Wednesday, May 15.

East Renfrewshire Council chief executive and returning officer Lorraine McMillan said: “Many people assume that they are automatically on the electoral register just because they pay council tax and this is not the case.

“Others turn up to vote and find out that they are not on the electoral roll because they have moved house.”
