Phone mast refused

POLLOKSHIELDS’ residents received some good news this week when it was announced that Glasgow city council has refused planning permission for a 17.5 metre phone mast which would loom over Maxwell Park.

Councillor David Meikle told The Extra: “I am delighted to hear the news that Glasgow city council has refused planning permission for the proposed installation of the mobile phone mast.

“I would like to congratulate everyone who campaigned against the proposal and hope Mono Consultants will now consider alternative locations”.

Mono Consultants planned to site the mast at the corner of St Andrews Drive/Springkell Avenue outside the entrance to the park where the pond is, in the West Pollokshields conservation area.

The council said the application was not in accordance with the Development Plan and government policy.

It also noted because of the height of the mast, it would be out of scale with other street furniture and diminish the visual quality of the existing tree cover and therefore it would not enhance the character of the conservation area.

The council also said if it had approved this application it would have created a precedent for further developments in the area.
