A Newton Mearns teenager has made the finals of Miss Scotland 2019.

Skye Stander (17), who has just left St Ninians High School, will battle it out against 17 other hopefuls from across Scotland to take the crown at the finals in June.

And it’s thanks to Skye’s mum that she’s in the competition.

Skye explained: I’ve always looked up to the girls in the competition but I never thought that I would be good enough to take part.

“My mum entered me and I didn’t think that I’d get this far.”

Skye continued: “I had to go to a meeting with the organisers and the current Miss Scotland.

“They asked me questions about myself and why I wanted to take part. I also had to submit a photo of myself and it was down to a panel to select the finalists.”

It came as a great shock to Skye when she received a text to say that she had made the cut and would be competing in the Miss Scotland 2019 finals.

She said: “I received a text but I didn’t think it was real! My mum went on the official Facebook page and saw my name listed. I was speechless. I still can’t believe it – it’s such a shock!”

The next stage of the competition saw Skye and the other girls take part in a photo shoot for Ayrshire magazine, and next up, the girls will compete in a fitness challenge and raise money for a charity of their choice.

Skye said: “I’m raising money for Heads Up, a charity that supports people with Head and Neck Cancer.

“It’s a cause close to my family’s hearts as my grandpa recently passed a way from throat cancer.

“When he was first diagnosed, there wasn’t a lot of support, and I want to give something back.

“I’ve organised a sky dive at the end of May, which I’m petrified about as I’m really scared of heights!

“But I wanted to push myself and do something completely out of my comfort zone. I’m also organising a Race Night to try and raise even more money for the charity.”

The Miss Scotland finals take place in June.
