East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure extended the offers to 19-year-olds Mya Peacock and Conor Bolger, both from Barrhead, as their apprenticeships come to an end this month.

Mya has been working with the team at Eastwood Park Leisure Centre, while Conor has been based at the Barrhead Foundry over the last 18 months.

Their apprenticeships were extended due to COVID and they have now successfully completed lifeguard and first aid training, obtaining a Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being Operational Services. More recently, they have been working to support visitors attending the vaccination hubs at Eastwood Park Leisure and the Barrhead Foundry.

Mya has a keen interest in sport, particularly boxing, and decided to apply for a Modern Apprenticeship to develop her sporting career, skills and knowledge.

Mya said: "I liked the sound of a Modern Apprenticeship and I'm keen on sports. I usually have boxing training three nights a week and I played football too. I've really enjoyed my apprenticeship and learning on the job so I was pleased to be asked to stay on at Eastwood Park Leisure."

Football fan Conor's interest in sports also led him to apply for the Modern Apprenticeship.

Conor said: "I didn't know what to do when I was coming out of school but I wanted something sports related for a year so decided to apply. I already knew some people at the Barrhead Foundry because I'm from the area and the staff have all been friendly and easy to get along with. I enjoyed the lifeguard training and even though everything was delayed because of COVID, I still managed to complete the qualification."

Anthony McReavy, Chief Executive of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure, said: "Our Modern Apprenticeships offer young people in the local community the chance to gain qualifications while enhancing and developing team working and customer services skills.

"We're pleased to support Mya and Conor through to the completion of their Modern Apprenticeships and to work with them to develop their interest and experience in sports. We look forward to continuing to work with them as part of our team."
