Diamond day for Kirky duo

It was a diamond day recently for Kirkintilloch couple Alex and Elspeth Cassells who 
celebrated their 60th 
wedding anniversary.

Despite lockdown measures restricting their celebrations, the duo had a great time at a small family get together in their son Alisdair’s garden.

Alex and Elspeth wed on Friday, September 2, 1960 at Renfrew Baptist Church. They lived for several years in the west end of Glasgow before moving to Kirkintilloch in 1966 with their two young sons Alisdair and Fraser.

The couple have lived in the same house ever since.

Daughter-in-law Jean said: “Elspeth is a great singer and was a member of Kirkintilloch ladies choir until a couple of years ago.

“She also volunteered with the Talking Newspaper for many years, recording the Kirky Herald each week to be distributed to local people with hearing difficulties.

“While the boys were young, Alex was a Boys’ Brigade officer at Kirkintilloch Baptist Church. He’s a keen bowler and has been a member of Westermains Bowling club for many years with many trophies to show for it.”

She added: “We had a great day in the garden with gazebos to keep the rain off us and a lovely night looking through old photos, starting with the wedding!”

The couple, who have five grand-daughters, Laura, Gemma, Heather, Lucy and Gail, were delighted to receiv a card from the Queen and a flowers from Provost Alan Brown.
