Newton Mearns couple search for brave volunteers for firewalk

A Newton Mearns couple is looking for brave volunteers to join them walking over hot coals for Rebecca Rocks.

Andrea and Alistair McKeown set up the charity in memory of their daughter who died of meningitis aged two.

The Rebecca Rocks Firewalk will take place on June 30 at Whitecraigs Rugby Club in association with Firewalk Scotland and they are looking for 48 other people to join them.

Rebecca Rocks raises money for the young people of Robin House Children’s Hospice to attend music concerts with their families.

Andrea and Alistair have been fundraising for Robin House and CHAS since the death of Rebecca in 2009 of meningitis but started Rebecca Rocks in 2010 to raise money specifically for tickets to concerts and events.

They have nearly raised £30,000 and aim to raise £5000 from The Firewalk after the success of the inaugural Rebecca Rocks festival held exclusively for the young people and families at Robin House last summer.

Alistair said: “The festival last summer was such a special event, full of happy memories, joy and laughter.

“We just knew we had to do it again this year and every year after. We were inspired to step up our fundraising activities and to organise a really special event. Something that will be a once in a lifetime occasion for those involved.”

Andrea said: “Rebecca loved music and she loved to dance. We will never be able to bring her back but it is fitting to be raising money helping to create happy memories for families in similar positions to ours.

“Robin House inform us of all the concerts and events the families go to and just how much joy has been created.”

Andrea added: “We would love people to join us on The Firewalk to raise money to keep that joy alive.”

Registration for the event costs £20.
