Gordon Matheson, the former leader of Glasgow City Council, plans to quit the local authority and take up a new post with Strathclyde University.
Mr Matheson had been a councillor for 17 years — five of them as leader of the council.
In September of last year he was replaced as leader by Frank McAveety.
He goes on to become a visiting professor at the university, while a by-election will be confirmed.
Mr Matheson, who represented the Anderston/City ward said: “As a cities man, I am delighted to accept this prestigious appointment which comes at a perfect time for me.
“Having served as a city leader I am fortunate to be in a position to still contribute to the development of international cities in a non-political capacity.”
