Video game fans are powering down at home and heading for the southside for GlesGames — a new event putting the ‘social’ back into the gamers network.
Following a successful launch in March, the second GlesGames takes place on May 2 at The Burrell Bar, with a line-up of PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PC, Xbox 360 and classic console games for all to enjoy.
For creator Simon Marshall, the point is “helping to bring back what was so great about gaming in days gone by”.
Simon told The Extra: “There’s so much emphasis on online multiplayer these days that it’s easy to forget what games used to be like, when you shared them in the company of others.
“One of my main aims with GlesGames was to help bring people face-to-face.
“The real motivation was the cancelled Scottish Games Expo last year — there were a lot of people who had planned to meet up for a night out which never happened. After that, I was determined to see how a local multiplayer event would go and I’m delighted that it all seemed to happen quickly.
“It’s a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy a relaxing night in the company of those who share a passion for gaming.”
May’s game line-up includes Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, Sportsfriends, Ultra Street Fighter IV — and the curiously named internet sensation, Mount Your Friends.
However, Simon is quick to reassure that GlesGames is for anyone, of any level of gaming experience — so it’s not a case of games geeks only need apply.
He explained: “There’s some skill involved, but the enjoyment comes from sharing moments with others rather than outright winning.
“In addition to the well-known games, it’s a chance for players to experience some independent titles which they might not have heard of before.
“And, based on the debut event, it’s a terrific night of hilarity, great food (gaming themed), fun games and prizes.”
