GOLD, silver and bronze medals came Giffnock North AAC’s way on Sunday, writes Croy Thomson, at the Scottish Junior Road Race Championships, hosted in Rouken Glen, in cool, dry conditions.

The under 17 boys team of Grant Muir, Jack Walker, Andrew Clark and Chris Russell won gold.

Muir broke away from his rivals some two kilometres into the two-lap 5k race and was never challenged, breaking the tape in 15 minutes 24 seconds.

Just 21 seconds behind Muir, team-mate Walker fought a gripping battle for silver with Edinburgh’s Ruaridh Miller, the Giffnock athlete claiming silver with a storming last 100 metres.

Team silver was claimed by Giffnock’s u13 girls trio Holly Still, Sarah Eunson and Rebecca Conroy, with Eilidh Cook chasing them home.

Individual bronze went to u15 Chloe Cowan, beaten only by Kath Gillespie of Central AC and Laura Penrice of Shettleston.

Further highlights included u20 Luke Traynor’s hard fought fourth in a high class contest over 5k, and u13 Johhny McLaughlin’s sixth place finish in leading team mates Keir Carolan, Euan Brodie and Ross Gray to one of three team fourth places for the local club.
