Gill and Carluke team smash £100,000 mark for CRUK

Carluke's Gill Murray and her band of volunteers have raised more than £10,000 this year following their annual pink-themed fair this month.

And that takes the total Gill has raised for Cancer Research UK over the years smashing through the £100,000 barrier.

Rowan Main, local fundraising manager for the charity, said: “We are over the moon at the success of Gill Murray’s charity day.

“Gill and her entire team of helpers have reached an incredible milestone in raising £100,000, and we are so grateful for everyone’s help.

“This event is a fixture in our fundraising calendar.

“Cancer Research UK relies on the people of Carluke and the local area to keep supporting this event and help us to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

“Many thanks to Gill and all her family and friends for helping more families celebrate Christmas together.”

This month’s fair at Kirkton Church saw a wide selection of craft stalls, activities for children and a tea room.

It was well supported, bringing the total raised for 2016 to £10,030. That sum includes money raised on the day, and from tablet sold in Gouldings Garden Centre, Teatime in Lanark, Jean Sinclair Shoes and Alfies in Carluke throughout the year.

Gill’s fundraising for Cancer Research UK started 20 years ago when she had a party-plan gathering at her house with some friends.

She decided to donate any profits to the charity instead of taking the commission, and that first donation was £50.

The annual party became very popular. Numbers increased each year, and Gill found herself having to put her furniture into her neighbour’s garage to create more room.

It soon outgrew the house, and had to be moved to the church, where it now fills all three halls, with teas being served in the church itself.

“I have an absolutely fabulous group of helpers who work alongside me,” said Gill,

“The event would not be possible without their support. They are a fantastic team.

“I would like to thank my many friends and family who give up their time to help with the preparation and running of the day, the local businesses who sell tablet throughout the year and local people for supporting the event.”
