Fireraisers threaten southside couples

TWO areas of the southside were hit by fireraisers — though police say they are not connected.

In the first, which took place at 5.20am on Friday, an elderly couple was targeted in their home on Old Castle Road in Cathcart.

A wheelie bin was set alight and placed outside their kitchen window.

The couple discovered the blaze after hearing a loud noise coming from their kitchen.

Police said the fire spread up through the basement to the couple’s kitchen.

An man (84) and a woman (83) were treated at the scene for minor injuries, but did not require hospital treatment.

The second fire took place at 4pm near a block of flats in St Andrews Drive in Pollokshields.

It was set at the front door of an accommodation, police say.

A couple became aware of smoke in their hallway and made their way to the balcony of the property.

The man (43) and his partner (28) were taken to the Victoria Infirmary by ambulance where they were treated for smoke inhalation before being released.

Speaking of the Cathcart incident, detective constable Marc Kelly of Cathcart police office said: “It is beyond anyone’s understanding why someone would deliberately set fire to an elderly couple’s bin and then place it outside their window.

“Thankfully, the elderly gentleman and his wife have not been injured but obviously they are very, very upset that someone would do this to them and their home”.

Detective constable Peter Paterson, of Gorbals CID, said that the couple in Pollokshields were, likewise, lucky to escape relatively unscathed.

He said: “Thankfully, neither of the people at home were seriously injured.

“However, I am very concerned that someone would blatantly set a fire in a common close in the middle of the day with no thought to what the consequences might be — not only to the people in the flat affected, but all the other residents in the block.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was on St Andrews Drive around 4pm on Friday and noticed anything unusual or perhaps saw someone hanging around to contact us as soon as possible”.
