EAST Renfrewshire’s Fairtrade Zone status has been renewed.
Since the last renewal, a number of initiatives and events have been held throughout the area.
A Fairtrade steering group meets at least twice a year to devise a Fairtrade action plan. This year a Fairtrade football festival was held in February which highlighted the fact that 75 per cent of the world’s footballs come from one region of Pakistan – which still has 10 million people in employment under the age of 14.
Recently, the group had a stall in The Avenue, as part of the feastRen festival, promoting Fairtrade produce.
Convener of Infrastructure and Sustainability councillor Tony Buchanan said: “This is excellent news for East Renfrewshire and a special thanks must go to all who have embraced the concept of Fairtrade and worked so hard to promote it in the community.
“If local people would like to get involved with the Fairtrade campaign in East Renfrewshire, they should contact Savio at firstname.lastname@example.org”.
