Southside wine and beer specialist, Maxwell’s, scooped two prestigious awards at the Scottish Grocer Awards last weekend.
The family business, owned by husband and wife team Onker and Jaswant, has two shops in Pollokshields and Clarkston.
They had been nominated in the categories of Licensed Retailer of the Year and Beer and Cider Retailer of the Year and walked away with both titles.
The original Maxwell’s in Pollokshields opened in 2010, and the Clarkston branch opened in August last year.
Maxwell’s offers around 500 wines and 300 craft beers and ales from all over the world.
They also sell a wide range of spirits and whiskies, as well as draft beers from pub-style beer taps to take home in re-fillable bottles called ‘growlers’. The beers are supplied from Glasgow’s own West Brewery and Williams Brothers from Alloa.
The judges said that Maxwell’s in Pollokshields was a “valuable asset for local customers” and when it came to Clarkston they were impressed “not only by Onker Singh’s depth of knowledge but also by the quality and confidence of his staff.”
Onker said: “It was a fantastic night. We were absolutely thrilled to win Licensed Retailer of the Year, and we’d just sat down after collecting the award when we were announced as winners of the Beer and Cider Retailer of the Year too.
“We are a small team who pride ourselves in offering a fantastic range of wines, beers, ciders and spirits, all wrapped up with great customer service.
“We’re so pleased to have our hard work recognised in the Scottish Grocer awards, and we hope that these wins will help us to further grow our business.”
John McNee, Editor of Scottish Grocer, said: “This is the 21st year for the Scottish Grocer Awards and I have no hesitation saying it was our best yet.
“Across the board, the standard of entries was exceptional and all of our finalists deserve tremendous credit for the work they do for the industry and their communities.
“Congratulations to all our winners including Maxwells from Glasgow, who all work very hard to make convenience retail one of Scotland’s most dynamic and engaging industries.”
