Tom receives long service award from Prince Edward

A teacher from Giffnock has been specially commended by HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex for his work with school pupils undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Tom Lyons, who teaches English at the High School of Glasgow, received from HRH a long service certificate, marking 18 years service with the school’s awards programme, eight years as manager.

This year, almost 250 pupils from third to sixth year from all over Glasgow and beyond are involved in the High’s School programme.

The Earl of Wessex heard that, under Tom’s leadership, the High School of Glasgow runs one of the “most successful” school-based Duke of Edinburgh Awards programmes in the country.

Over the last 15 years, 2,676 High School pupils have participated in the D of E awards programme, with 1,250 receiving bronze, 913 silver and 513 gold awards.

Tom was presented with his award certificate during a royal visit by the Earl of Wessex to the High School of Glasgow.

Tom said: “It was a great honour to welcome the Earl of Wessex and for HRH to hear personally from our pupils and staff members involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.”

During the visit, the Earl of Wessex who is royal trustee at the UK awards programme and chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh International Awards Foundation, met High School pupils, including several gold achievers, members of school staff and representatives of local charities currently involved in the awards.

At the end of the visit, HRH Earl of Wessex signed a plaque to commemorate the occasion and joined pupils in the sports field who were involved in the sports leadership part of the D of E awards.
