A summer project is aiming to provide 1200 children in Govanhill with a back to school kit.

To celebrate the new term at school, every child attending primary school in the area will receive a brand new back pack full of supplies ahead of their first day back.

There will also be plenty of fun for the children including live music, food, face painting, hair cuts, and family photos.

Elyse MacKinnon, project leader, said: “Last year I spent time at an organisation in Los Angeles called the Dream Center and each year they hold an event like this one.

“At the conference they held, Danise Jurado, who is a director at the Dream Center, spoke at a session about how you could make a difference in your local community. She said start with a Back To School Bash and make it fun as this an simple way to bring your community together.

“Glasgow Elim Church are based in Govanhill so when I returned home I kept thinking about what Danise Jurado had said and decided that this was something that could be done for Govanhill, a place where as high as 30 percent of children are still experiencing poverty.

“We believe that every child deserves the best start in life, and what a fantastic way to encourage them as they head into school for their first day back with a full school bag!”

Elyse continued: “Fundraising for the bags and supplies is well underway and and there has already been an amazing response to the bash but a lot of money is still needed in order to give each child an equal chance of getting a bag.

“We have raised approximately half of the amount needed for the backpacks and supplies.

“One of our fundraising ideas was the opportunity for individuals to become involved by sponsoring a backpack for just £10.

“People can do that by sponsoring at www.glasgowelim.org/back-to-school-bash/ Every time someone sponsors a backpack their name will be entered into a draw to win Afternoon Tea at One Devonshire Gardens!”

Elyse is encouraging the whole community to get involved in the event.

She said: “We would love for people to also get involved by coming out to help on the day.

“In particular we need some more people to join our team who have expertise in face-painting or balloon animals, entertainers, and hair-dressers.”

B2SB day takes place on Saturday, August 4, from 11am until 3 pm.
