Acclaimed Scottish children’s author AH Proctor kicked off Book Week Scotland with a trip to Merrylee Primary School.
Angela introduced the children to her extraordinary little witch, Thumble Tumble who lives on the the enchanted Isle of Arran, where Thumble Tumble and her friends – McCools, a three legged Haggis and Jock the Sea Dragon – have to defeat the evil Night Witches!
The fairy tales which are Brothers Grimm in style, with a very Scottish twist are perfect for Book Week Scotland.
Angela read to the children from her first novel, Thumble Tumble and the Ollpheist then led them in her imagination challenge to create a potion to banish a Spike Backed Giant.
Angela said: “I was literally blown away by the children’s creativity and imagination. The challenge was to create a potion to destroy the giant and they created on the ‘Bye Bye Potion’.
“The name alone showed great ‘out of the box’ thinking and when added to the fabulous ingredients including, Poisonous Foxgloves Flowers and Potion Fungi it was truly ‘magical’!”
As part of her commitment to support schools and improve literacy, Angela commissioned a Novel Study which is being made available as a fabulous free teaching resource for all schools across Scotland during Book Week Scotland.
Angela continued: “The imagination and creativity that inspires the future generations of authors, playwrights, poets and songwriters, is born from the inspiration and education we discover in our childhood.
“Indeed, my successful Thumble Tumble adventure series would never have been possible without the magical experiences I had at school as a child.”
She added: “To help make sure that Scotland continues to be a world leader in creativity, I decided to create a new novel study that will give schools the magical key to unlock the most creative minds.”
Through the Novel Study Packs children will discover the magical world of Thumble Tumble – an extraordinary little witch on her many adventures on the Isle of Arran.
Aimed at Primary 4-6, the fun and engaging activities within the pack explore tools for reading, words and phrases, characterisation, listening activities, creating texts and more.
