As we enter 2019, charity founder of East Renfrewshire Good Causes Russell Macmillan looks ahead to the coming year and shares some personal experiences and thoughts with The Extra.

Russell (54), living in Newton Mearns, is a registered blind man, who had his life saved and type 1 diabetes cured after a successful pancreas/kidney transplant in 2007.

He as not had his health troubles to seek. However despite these difficulties he set up and runs ERGoodCauses with the help of his very supportive wife Yvonne.

Russell shared with the Extra and it’s readers the following:

“After experiencing the recent Christmas festivities where hopefully many people received wonderful material gifts, I do wonder how many people in our community still find something missing in their lives.

“I feel very fortunate to have a really strong Christian faith and this has carried me through some terrifying times where no amount of material things could have helped me.

“One example of real fear was when I had to have an eye surgically removed and replaced with an artificial one, and I’m afraid that scared the life out of me psychologically. It is times like these when a person with true faith, can find themselves being helped through, and I never felt alone.

“If there is one gift I could share wih others, it would be the gift of faith, as in my experience it’s the only thing that helps combat fear, lonlieness and many other problems in our modern world. So I would encourage everyone to at least explore the value of faith. Why not come along to an Alpha course being run by our own church, Maxwell Mearns Castle Parish Church, or the many other churches which run similar courses?

“The MMCC Alpha course starts on Sunday evening, January 20. And hopefully you will gain the gift of faith, that has helped me through many of my personal medical and life battles.”
