Dogs with scabies abandoned in Abington

Three Yorkshire terriers were discovered in the Stoneyburn area on May 13 and a lhasa apso and two Yorkshire terrier puppies were found in Abington on May 16.

It is the second time lhaso apso type dogs have been found in Abington.

The animals are now in the care of the charity’s Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Hamilton.

Inspector Joanna Boyle said, “The pups are suffering from sarcoptic mange, better known as scabies, which is highly contagious and can be passed to humans. The infection is so bad they are chewing themselves in an attempt to relieve the itch.

“All four adult dogs are females and appear to have had pups recently so it’s possible the two pups are linked to the adult yorkies.

“They are all now receiving the veterinary treatment and care they need with us.

“We believe they may have come from a nearby puppy farm and might be linked to three lhasa apso type dogs found in Abington last year, who also had bad skin conditions.

“Anyone with information should contact us as we are treating this as a case of suspected animal cruelty.”
