'˜Devastating' blow for Govanhill Baths

A scheme to transform Govanhill Baths is now in jeopardy after the Scottish Government refused funding for the venue's regeneration.

It now leaves the £6.1 million scheme to transform the Edwardian building into a fitness and wellbeing centre under threat.

Govanhill Baths was in line for £2.1 million of government funding necessary for works scheduled to begin this year.

But bosses have been stunned to discover they have been snubbed by the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF) – for the second year.

A Govanhill Baths Community Trust (GBCT) spokesman said: “This news is devastating, it jeopardises the whole project and will have a demoralising effect on a community that has fought and worked so hard for 17 years to bring this vital community asset back to life.

We are extremely disappointed that, for the second year in a row, the Scottish Government has decided not to support the refurbishment of Govanhill Baths through the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF).

“We believe that the reasoning behind the decision to not award funding to Govanhill Baths is inconsistent with other projects that have been granted funding previously and in this year’s awards. GBCT know that we meet all of the criteria for funding and that our project uniquely “fits the bill” for the government’s flagship Community Empowerment and Regeneration strategies.

“The Trustees will be seeking answers on behalf of the shareholders and the people of Govanhill as to why our community has been ignored yet again.”

Locals have fought tirelessly to retain the B-listed building after it was shut by Glasgow City Council in 2001.

The baths is currently used as a venue for a host of diffferent community events, including theatre production.

Councillor Soryia Siddique said: “It’s disappointing news for Govanhill Baths and local communities. There is broad recognition that Govanhill is a pressurised area and the local communities have campaigned for investment and regeneration.

“This decision could be a significant setback. I will be joining the community and Govanhill Baths to raise their concerns.

“The Scottish Government must recognise the challenges and deprivation in the area and provide funding to improve living standards.”
