Cosgrove’s Short Story Competition (sponsored by The Avenue at the Mearns and Waterstones) invited local primary school children to submit a short story using the theme ‘Out of ThisWorld’.

And what a budding selection of authors we have out there, from primary one right through to primary seven.

The competition, running for the third year, received almost 100 entries which were judged in three age categories: Primary 1-3, Primary 4-5 and Primary 6-7.

Helena Winocour, organiser of the competition and judge, said:

‘The competition is now in it’s third year and we have seen over 300 stories packed with creativity and imagination since it began’

The winners are as follows:

P1-3 -1st: Cameron Mitchell, OLM; Runner up: Aaron Kidd, Carolside Primary; Highly commended: Harriet Cousin, Westholme Infant School

P4-5 - 1st: Greta Lawson, Netherlee Primary; Runner up: Olivia Calvo, Craigton Primary; Highly commended: Ruth Leckie, Carolside primary

P6-7 - 1st: Cara Dunn, Springhill/Auchenback; Runner up: Tomas Overton, Netherlee Primary; Highly Commended: Jonah Griffiths, Netherlee Primary.

The Diana Cowen prize for outstanding achievement in illustration was won by Lucy Wilson in P4 at Eaglesham Primary.

Walter Hecht, Cosgrove Care Chief Executive, said: “What a wonderful feel-good event. Just seeing these young kids self-worth going through the roof and the obvious pride felt by their parents made it all worthwhile.”
