A TOTAL of £4,000 has been granted by Newton Mearns south area forum to Mearns Kirch church cemetery in a bid to repair and upgrade the burial ground.
Over the past years the grave walls and headstones have become dangerous and unsafe but work will start in the future to carry out repairs in this centuries old cemetery.
Councillor McAlpine said: “Mearns Kirk Church is one of the oldest and attractive places of worship in East Renfrewshire.
“Repair work need to be carried out urgently to secure some sections of the cemetery’s walls and work is ongoing to find sources of funding to allow these vital repairs to be carried out.”
Mearns Kirk Church is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion a gala dinner will be held on September 21 in the church hall.
