The Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns recently celebrated its 30-year anniversary since the Phase 1 completion of The Avenue in June 1988, formerly known as Mearns Cross Shopping Centre.

Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue said: ‘The Avenue has been Central To You, the community of East Renfrewshire, for many decades testament to the loyalty of our shoppers from East Renfrewshire and the surrounding areas that we are here to celebrate this milestone.

“During tough economic times over the decades and many changes in the retail environment, we thank you for supporting your local retailers within the shopping centre. Here’s to the next 30 years at The Avenue.”

What have you recently been working on at the shopping centre?

Over the past year, together with the shopping centre owners NewRiver we have invested hundreds of thousands of pounds to ensure our shoppers have a more convenient local shopping experience.

For example, £570,000 was invested in upgrading to one-way safer car parks, as well as internal and external decoration works to brighten the place up, more eco-friendly lighting has been introduced internally and externally, plus we have upgraded the centre’s heating systems and replaced many roof areas around the shopping centre.

What are your future plans for the shopping centre?

With hundreds of new family homes being built in the local area, our focus is to continue to invest in the shopping centre to improve the overall customer experience and remain as the local community hub within East Renfrewshire.

I am delighted to advise that many of our retailers including Waterstones, About Living, Little VIPs, à bientôt, Taylors of Giffnock and the Energy Advisory Centre recently renewed their leases to remain at the heart of Newton Mearns within The Avenue.

We also look forward to welcoming new potential retailers as times and retail requirements change. We hope to share more good news stories soon.
