Hole in one for East Ren’s young jobseekers scheme

A voluntary work experience scheme running across East Renfrewshire has led to a permanent position for one local job seeker.

Peter Lafferty (22) is one of over 50 young people to take up voluntary placements through the Our Community work experience initiative launched by East Renfrewshire MP Jim Murphy and Eastwood MSP Ken Macintosh earlier this year.

Of those placements, 12 have led to permanent, paid jobs — including Peter’s position at Mearns Castle Golf Academy, which followed a six week placement.

He explained: “I was unemployed for several months and, at first, was quite sceptical about work experience.

“But I have to say, it has been great and after six weeks of work experience I now work five days a week, full time.

“I would recommend it to anyone.”

The ongoing scheme is open to young unemployed people in East Ren, and will not affect any benefits currently received.

Meeting with Peter at Mearns Castle, MSP Ken Macintosh said: “Time and time again we have heard that to get a job you need experience, yet to get experience you often need a job.

“A big thanks in this case to Russell Gray, and to his team at Mearns Castle Golf 

“This initiative helps young people to get that foot in the door, at the very least gaining something extra for the CV — but as with Peter, in some cases leading directly to a 

“It is great to see the support that local employers are offering and that this investment of their time is paying off.”

East Ren’s man in Westminster added: “It has been great to see so many local businesses taking part.

“Youth employment is a problem which must be solved on a national scale, but this local initiative has helped over 50 people gain great experience.

“Peter is a perfect example of how successful this scheme is turning out to be.”
