MONEY advice officers in East Renfrewshire have issued a warning over dodgy debt advice.
The team is increasingly concerned about the rise in the number of residents approaching the council after receiving the wrong advice on how to handle their debts.
A spokesman for the money advice service explained: “There are unscrupulous private companies operating in East Renfrewshire, who are not explaining the options available to people.
“This leads to unrealistic, costly and inappropriate debt arrangements, and some do not fully protect the customer”.
Residents facing debt problems are asked to contact the council team as a first port of call, where they will be offered free and independent advice, who will contact creditors on their behalf.
The drop-in service runs every Wednesday in Barrhead and Thursday in Giffnock – more information is available on 0800 052 1023 or email@example.com.
