Busby community comes together to take care of elderly residents

Independent Councillor David Macdonald started a fundraising campaign to raise £200 to purchase gritters and other requirement for Mary Young Place, a senior living council home complex in Busby.

The Busby community responded amazingly raising £230 to purchase two rotating broadcast gritters, an electric handheld gritter and snow shovels.

Four local volunteers including Cllr Macdonald are now standing by to do the gritting when freezing conditions are present.

On top of that, the community received a donated grit bin and one tonne of white road salt from Iain Macdonald of Moidart Arboricultural Contractors Ltd exclusively for the residents of Mary Young Place.

Cllr Macdonald said: “This all came about as a result of East Renfrewshire council turning down my request to grit Mary Young Place this year after a resident contacted me worried about being able to get to her doctor’s appointments.

“So I decided to start a fundraiser to get some broadcast gritters and other equipment purchased.

The local community response was just amazing. We raised £230 in less than 24 hours and four volunteers have joined me to provide gritting for the community.

“It’s been a resounding success and great to know that these people will continue to have their independence in the colder months.

“I am so proud of the efforts of so many to take care of our older people.”
