Blaze rips through southside tenement roof

A dozen families were evacuated from their homes last night as a fire ripped through the roof of a southside tenement.

Fire crews, police and three ambulances arrived at the scene on Maxwell Drive, Pollokshields, at around 10pm on Thursday following 15 emergency calls.

The Fire and Rescue Scotland team battled the “well-developed blaze” throughout the night, and used aerial apparatus and rescue platforms to rescue those trapped in the building.

A spokesman confirmed that 12 families were evacuated as a result of “extensive damage” to the roof, and added that only one female as treated for smoke inhalation, as a precautionary measure.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is to be carried out.
