Shawlands has it’s own ‘caped crusader’ in the shape of Eddie Kirkwood, who’s been helping keep the streets clean and tidy for years.

Eddie uses a wheelchair as a result of his disability, cerebral palsy which permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination.

He likes to keep himself busy and is well known in the Shawlands and Queen’s Park areas for his litter picking. He’s done this for some years now completely unpaid, merely to help keep his local area tidy.

Eddie’s passion is football. His disability unfortunately meant that he was never able to play the game however in 2013 a Scottish Powerchair Football League started, enabling Eddie to enjoy the sport he so loved.

The league has progressed since the early days and many players now have specialist sports chairs.

Eddie played last season for Queen’s Park Spiders in his NHS supplied chair, the same one that he also uses on his litter picking mission. The team came bottom of the league as they couldn’t compete against the faster sports chairs used by other competitors.

At the final fixtures of the season, Eddie encouraged his teammates to start a new club and Glasgow Gladiators Powerchair FC was born.

Eddie needs a sports powerchair for the new season which commences in September. The chair will cost him more than £5000, a huge sum completely out of reach for someone who works for nothing.

Eddie’s friend, Kenny Munro has set up a Crowdfunding page to try and help fund this specialist chair. So far, this has managed to raise £2491 of a £5500 target, so they’re well on the way having raised 45 per cent of whay they need. You can donate at:
