An unforgettable weekend for Stamperland FC 2009

Stamperland FC 2009 players are riding high after winning the Blackpool Cup last weekend for the first time.

The youngsters – Shay McCracken, Rocco Di Giacomo, Louie McGinley, Ben Stoddart, Josh McCabe, Fraser Grant, Conor Baillie, Daniel Hannah and Freddie Welsh showed off their skills playing against teams from as far afield as Romania, Northern Ireland as well as two teams from Glasgow.

The boys won all six of their games, scoring 48 goals and only conceding four on the way to winning the cup by beating Charlie Miller Academy in the final 7-0 which included a hat-trick from Shay.

Players Fraser, Ben, Daniel, Rocco, Louie, Conor, Jack scored goals in the tournament and goalie Freddie actually saved three penalties as well.

Not only that, but the team also managed to get to a Blackpool FC game on the Friday, the Pleasure Beach on the Saturday and also a tour of Man City on the Monday, which all made it a weekend that the boys will never forget.

Coach Sean McCracken said: “It was just fantastic, a really great weekend.

“It was organised a bit last minute – just at the beginning of the year. We held a race night to raise funds for the trip and local businesses chipped in to help with prizes. It was great to have that community support.

“The team have taken part in tournaments before, but just in Glasgow, so this is the first time they have been away and won which is great.

“They are so pleased with themselves and they have a rota to see who has the trophy and when so it can be shared around the players and family and friends.”

Sean continued: “What has been great about the trip, was that it has helped them bond. They were all close before, but this has definitely brought them closer.”

Fresh from their big win, the team are now looking ahead to competitions closer to home and embarking on their latest bout of fundraising.

The youngsters will be bag-packing at Asda Newton Mearns tomorrow (Saturday, April 14) from 10am until 3pm.
