A peep at the past - Shawbridge Street in 1968

This winter view from riverford road shows the soon to be demolished Co-op and Maxwell Arms pub.

The society’s counting house where Miss Nellie Rodden supervised the dividend calculations was in Christian Street.

Behind the Co-op building there was another three-close two-storey tenement in Bengal Place.

The first Campbell Library had occupied a site in the left foreground. Opened In December 1968, the new library is seen here under construction.

The multi-storey buildings are 124 and 142 shawbridge street, but these street numbers using the same figures caused some confusion.

The shadow against the gable of 124 is from the building of the same design at 21 Riverbank Street.

Along with the still to be built block at the Riverford Road corner the four 22 storey units here were demolished in 2008 and 2009.
