Everyone would love to have an ultra-modern, brand-new kitchen fitted but the one officially unveiled at the school for kids with special needs didn’t represent just a home improvement but a whole life improvement for these youngsters.

To say this new cooking area is custom-built for the Stanmore pupils would be a massive understatement.

It is what is technically termed a ‘switch kitchen’, where every cooker, work surface and cupboard can instantly and automatically be adjusted for the person working it, electronic sensors lowering them to allow a wheelchair-using budding chef to get cooking.

The kitchen will help Stanmore meet its major aim of getting its youngsters as well prepared as possible for a later life outside the school, living as independently as possible.

It is the second major facility to be provided to the school by the charity Bright Horizons Foundation for Children.
