Locals invited in to meet Scotland’s first ‘homemakers’ at Newton Mearns care home

Locals are being invited to experience a ‘first of its kind’ approach to care at an East Renfrewshire care home.

Instead of having separate care workers and housekeeping staff, the team at Newton House on North Greenlaw Way, will operate as ‘Homemakers’.

That means that Homemakers are responsible for the wellbeing, care and companionship of residents plus the general tidiness and hygiene of the 113-bed home.

The revolutionary approach, the first time it is believed to be operated in Scotland, aims to make the care home much more like the normal experience people have living in their own homes.

The luxury home, which is run by Hamberley Care Homes is opening soon and is inviting locals to take part in an Open Day this Friday 15th March.

As well as meeting the Homemakers, attendees can take part in a cake decorating masterclass, enjoy a free manicure, attend a singing workshop or simply kick back and enjoy a classic film in the cinema with free popcorn.

Home Manager Helen Hendrie said she was delighted to welcome the community into the home for the first time.

She said: “I’m excited to introduce the Homemakers of Hamberley to our community, this is a revolutionary model of person-centred care that will be truly life-enhancing for our residents.

“Not only does having such a personalised approach help people feel valued and remove social isolation, but it’ll be our Homemakers who will spot changes in residents’ wellbeing early. This means our clinical team can adjust levels of care much earlier than other types of care would allow.

“I’m also very proud to open the home to visitors officially for the first time, our facilities are wonderful and I do hope everyone can come along and enjoy a free manicure in our beauty salon, or take part in the cake decorating masterclass with our resident chef.”

The Open Day will be held on Friday 15th March from 10am – 6pm. Guests are invited to attend throughout the day.
