Richard Petrie, the interiors expert at www.thomas-sanderson.co.uk, has put together the following tips:

Light Colours

Stay away from dark walls and statement wallpaper which will make a room feel much smaller and darker. Instead, introduce soft whites and lighter colours which will help light bounce around the room. Remember to stay away from harsh whites as they can often make a room feel clinical and cold whereas off-whites will create a much warmer effect.

Trim Trees and Shrubs Outside Windows and Doors

To bring more light inside it’s useful looking outside and seeing if any trees and shrubs are covering your windows. You could consider replacing overgrown plants with smaller, low-lying plants to keep your view unobstructed and the natural light pouring in.

Move Your Furniture

In rooms that are lacking natural light try moving furniture around to optimise how much light can access the room. Pleated blinds are perfect for rooms that don’t have much light as they allow privacy when down but when open they don’t take up much space meaning more light can enter the room.

Add Mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to reflect natural light around the room. If you place them on an adjacent wall to a window or glass door it will trick the eye into thinking the room is bigger and also bounce the natural light straight into the room!

Window Coverings

In your home, natural light can be enhanced by layering different window treatments at the window. Voile or sheer blinds are perfect for offering privacy but still allowing natural light to come into the home especially during the months which are brighter as you may want to soften harsh light coming in.
