Giffnock Theatre Players take on Steel Magnolias

A well-known local theatre group is gearing up for its final production of their 70th birthday season.

Giffnock Theatre Players have so far this season presented Noel Coward’s sparkling comedy Blithe Spirit, and then followed that with a slice of classic American drama with Arthur Miller’s All My Sons.

Now they are presenting Steel Magnolias, famously filmed in the 80s with Shirley Maclaine and Dolly Parton, but originally a stage play by Robert Harling.

It is based on a difficult family experience which Harling went through but which he turned into this fine comedy-drama about the bond which develops among a group of women living in Louisiana.

GTP member David Pearson explains: “The title suggests the female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel. The dialogue reveals how the women use humour and light-hearted conversation to cope with the serious situations which life is throwing at them.”

Steel Magnolias is at Clarkston Hall on Friday, April 20, at 7.30pm and Saturday, April 21, at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 and can be purchased by phoning 07518 201756, emailing [email protected]. or by visiting www.steel-magnolias.eventbrite.co.uk.
