Pupils tuck into local produce

An innovative partnership is helping East Renfrewshire Council provide local food produce to the area’s primary schools.

Each of the 23 school kitchens now receives a mixed box of organic vegetables every week. The initiative is part of the Council’s drive to constantly improve the healthy, nutritious meals, whilst using locally sourced produce.

Many of the vegetables are grown at the glasshouses in Rouken Glen Park, which are managed by Locavore.

Councillor Paul O’Kane said: “Our catering service already provides high quality meals, so I am delighted that this latest partnership will help it to improve even further.”

Reuben Chesters, founder of Locavore, added: “We’re delighted that our produce is reaching school plates just a few miles away from where they are grown and the enthusiasm we have seen from the kitchen staff about this partnership is fabulous.”
